Career OpportunitiesWhen looking for career opportunities, one should not overlook the time-honored traditional method of cold-calling on employers. Sometimes they don't know they need your talents until you show up. Such a great number of career opportunities in the market are not posted outside a company and you won't know what they are until you ask. The first thing to do is to work up a list of companies you are interested in working for; the longer the list the more possible career opportunities you will find. If you are able to relocate, the wider your search will be and the more career opportunities you will be able to find. Once you've gotten your list together, it is time to list the people you will have the authority to offer you a position. Focus on the hiring person in the department in which you are seeking career opportunities and do not settle for the name of the human resources person. This is vital, because of the next step. When you have the name of the hiring person, write a cover letter personalized with that person's name and title. Be sure to mention something about the company in your letter to show that you are serious and have done your homework. In your letter, let them know that you will be giving them a follow-up call and include a specific date. Once you have them on the phone, be persistent. If they do not want to give you a formal interview, ask just to meet with them on an informal basis. Do this even if they have no current career opportunities. |
