Employment Agencies

Each state will have their own rules and regulations governing employment agencies, but there are some similarities.

Employment agencies, or private personnel placement services as they are sometimes called, usually include any person who charges fees, direct or indirect, in consideration of the person providing information on employment opportunities.

Most states require all employment agencies to obtain a separate license for each location.

Employers use employment agencies as a convenience and to find specialised skills. Employers will also frequently list jobs with agencies without advertising them, so it is always worth your while to check with employment agencies even if they are not currently advertising for the kind of job you are seeking. Agencies are also a useful resource for finding 'second jobs' since they often have positions on second and third shift.

Some employment agencies charge a fee for finding you a job. These agencies will require you to sign a contract which will, in effect, commit you to paying a fee even if you should find a job on your own with a company which they have contacted on your behalf in the recent past (usually 6 months).

Employment agencies who do not charge a fee will almost always say so in their ads. Agencies who do charge a fee may not say so until you are in their office, so always ask before going down to fill out an application.

Many employment agencies who do not charge a fee will generally call themselves a 'Staffing Service'.

All employment agencies, regardless of whether you are applying for temporary or permanant employment, will require you to fill out a application form. You will also have to produce 2 forms of photo ID to prove your eligibality to work in the United States.

Since employment agencies compete with each other for business, it is advisable to register with a few different companies because they will all have clients that the others don't deal with. A good tactic is to spend a day on the phone and line up appointments to register with the agencies on the following day. Allow about 2 hours for each appointment since you will have to fill out a lengthy form and probably spend some time waiting as well as the time required for the actual interview.
