By following up on job openings you show prospective employers that you are interested in the company and the position. Plus it gives you another chance to sell yourself. The best way to follow-up on job openings depends on how you contacted the employer and your own personal preferences. Those who hate talking on the phone can use e-mail. others may prefer the telephone. You need to be aggressive in following up job openings because employers will not call you when the have hundred of people interested in the position. Always make the time to follow-up all job openings, no matter how busy you think are, and do so in a timely fashion; usually within a week to 10 days for conventional job-searching, or sooner for online applications. Create a log of the job openigns you have applied for so you have a record of your search and follow-up. Make your follow-up brief, to the point and professional. When following up on job openings by phone, make a short script, or notes, to help you keep on target of what you want to say. Have a copy of you resume handy in case you are asked to clarify something. Always thank the person for taking the time to speak with you about their job openings. And remember: follow up, follow up, follow up. |
