Sales Careers

Sale careers come in two camps -- inside sales and outside sales. Where one will flourish depends a lot on the individual. If one is independent and can manage one's time well, then outside sales careers are in order. If one needs the companionship of working with the same people everyday, then insides sales careers should be considered.

Outside sales careers are for self-starters. If a person works better independently than with a schedule and team, this may be the area for them. An outside sales career invloves:

  • Managing one's own schedule.
  • A workplace that changes daily.
  • Appearance counts.
  • Focus is vital.

Inside sales careers involve working a set number of hours each day in an office. Inside sales careers involve:

  • Being on-call.
  • Working in an office and collaborating.

Both types of sales careers involve:

  • Knowing how to “wow” the customer with a great first impression.
  • Knowing the product well.
  • Constantly learning by attending conferences and studying the trade.
  • Being an ethical salesperson, and working to keep customers loyal.
  • Honing listening skills.
  • Keeping a log of common customer questions and concerns, and developing solutions.
  • Learning to manage time effectively.
  • Learning from peers and taking advantage of networking opportunities.
